Angel Alanis is one of Chicago’s true underground lifers, a producer and DJ who’s been active since the mid 90s and has touched every corner of the Midwest sound: techno, house, electro, acid, and hard house. His catalog runs deep, with releases on Tresor, Tronic, International House Records (IHR), Moody Recordings, Underground Construction, Moonshine, Catalyst Recordings, and Contact Records.
He started DJing at 14, learning the craft the Chicago way: house parties, basements, and the radio mix shows on WBMX and B96 that shaped a whole generation.
In the 90s, he co founded Mushgroove Productions with Frankie Vega and DJ Sonic, pushing events across the city while dropping his first records on DJ Hyperactive's Contact label. That run led to a connection with DJ CZR and International House Records, where he was signed by Bad Boy Bill, a key moment in his rise through Chicago’s hard house and techno scenes.
By the early 2000s, Angel launched Asquared-muzik, distributed by Dust Traxx, and teamed up with Rees Urban as Pair Of Jacks, releasing on TRESOR, Moonshine, and Catalyst Recordings. His sound kept evolving, always rooted in Chicago but never stuck in one lane.
Angel later worked closely with DJ Pierre and the Afro Acid label, helping with label operations and performing live alongside DJ Pierre and DJ Spank. In 2011, he delivered a remix of Phuture’s “Acid Trax,” and after DJ Spank passed, Angel joined the remaining Phuture tour dates, finishing with a set at Movement Electronic Music Festival in Torino, Italy.
Across the years, he’s launched multiple imprints, including D Form with Steve Parker and his current label Slap Jaxx, while continuing to produce, DJ, and collaborate with his wife, Maria Goetz, on original tracks and remixes.
Three decades in, Angel Alanis is still pushing forward, still Chicago, still underground, still building on a legacy that spans basements, big rooms, and some of the most respected labels in the game.
